The XXV RiNEm has ended! Here follows the list of the awarded researchers!
As usual, RiNEm encourages and supports the activities of young researchers and PhD students in the Electromagnetic Fields sector by providing awards.
Each author (including co-authors) can participate in only one of the RiNEm awards. The choice of the award will be made by the organizing committee, but authors can suggest the award they would like to compete for. Among all the contributions competing for each award, a selection will be made to determine the works that will be admitted to oral presentation and compete for the awards.
To apply for an award (except for the Sorrentino Award, for which reference is made to the dedicated section), it is sufficient to specify the desired award when submitting the work through the google form (LINK)
DESCRIPTION OF AWARDS AND AWARDED
Barzilai Award
The Barzilai Award is provided by SIEm (Italian Society of Electromagnetism) and it is awarded to the best work proposed by young researchers (all authors must be under 35 years of age, not reached by September 30, 2024). The award is sponsored by CNIT (Consorzio Nazionale Interuniversitario per le Telecomunicazioni).
The research activity of Giorgio Barzilai (1911 – 1987), initiator of the Electromagnetism School of the Faculty of Engineering of the University of Rome “La Sapienza,” was characterized by methodological rigor and constant pursuit of practical purposes, combining theoretical and experimental aspects. From 1976 to 1985, Giorgio Barzilai was President of the Italian Commission of URSI. In 1978, he was appointed Fellow of the Institute of Electrical and Electronic Engineers (IEEE), and in 1985, he received the Centennial Medal of the IEEE.
Barzilai Award Winners (ex aequo): Matteo Bruno Lodi (Università di Cagliari), Andrea Motroni (Università di Pisa)
Barzilai’s Honorary Mentions: Federico Giusti (Università di Siena), Edoardo Negri (Università di Roma “La Sapienza”)
Sannino Award
The Sannino Award is provided by MECSA in memory of Prof. Mario Sannino and it is intended for the best work proposed by young researchers (all authors must be under 35 years of age, not reached by September 30, 2024) on microwave circuits and devices and millimeter waves.
As a Full Professor of Applied Electronics at the Department of Electrical Engineering of the University of Palermo, Mario Sannino’s main research interests included microwave characterization and modeling in terms of noise figure and related parameters for advanced semiconductor devices, methodologies development for nonlinear analysis of oscillators, tunnel diode circuits, transmitters for MTI radar systems, automation of measurement systems, and digital instrumentation design.
Sannino Award’s winner: Alessandra Di Florio Di Renzo (Alma Mater Studiorum Università di Bologna)
Latmiral Award
The Latmiral Award is provided by SIEm and it is awarded to the best POSTER proposed by doctoral students or PhD holders who obtained the title in the years 2023 or 2024. Among the authors of the submitted work, the tutor of the doctoral student (or doctoral students in case of collaboration between doctoral students with the same tutor) may also be present. The award is sponsored by CNIT (Consorzio Nazionale Interuniversitario per le Telecomunicazioni).
Gaetano Latmiral (1909 – 1995) was, along with Giorgio Barzilai, Mario Boella, and Giuliano Toraldo di Francia, the founder of electromagnetic research in Italy. During the Second World War, he decisively contributed to the development of radar and radar countermeasures. A companion in captivity of the theologian Dietrich Bonhoeffer, he managed to escape racial persecution. After the war, he carried out studies and research activities at CERN in Geneva, at the Italian Higher Military Institute of Transmissions, at the Italian National Research Council, and at the University of Rome “La Sapienza” as a visiting professor of Physics. Finally, in 1955, he was appointed to the chair of the course “Theory and Technique of Electromagnetic Waves” (the first chair of applied electromagnetism in Italy) at the Naval University Institute of Naples (now Parthenope University).
Latmiral Award’s Winners (ex aequo): Francesco Lestini (Università di Roma “Tor Vergata”), Francesca Nanni (Università di Roma “Tor Vergata”)
Latmiral Award’s Honorary Mention: Sabrina Zumbo (Università degli Studi Mediterranea di Reggio Calabria)
Someda Award
The Someda award, in memory of Professor Carlo Giacomo Someda, is provided by SIEm and it is awarded to the best work in the field of “Photonics” proposed by young authors (all authors must be under 35 years of age, not reached by September 30, 2024). The award is sponsored by CNIT (Consorzio Nazionale Interuniversitario per le Telecomunicazioni).
An eminent scientist and great teacher, Carlo Giacomo Someda graduated in Electronic Engineering in 1964, subsequently obtaining a Master of Science from Stanford University. A Full Professor of Electromagnetic Fields since 1976, he was Director of the Electronics Institute at the University of Bologna, but he also conducted research and teaching activities at the University of Trieste and especially at the University of Padua. In Padua, he founded a school of optics and photonics. After initially conducting research in the fields of microwaves and circuit theory, he found in optical fiber communications the most congenial field of activity, in collaboration with Bell Laboratories in the USA. Professor Someda can be considered a pioneer in this research field at the international level. He mentored many professors who currently teach at the universities of Ancona, Bologna, Brescia, Padua, and Udine.
Someda Award’s winner: Martina Cappelletti (Università di Padova)
Sorrentino Award
The award is established by the International Union of Radio Science (URSI) in memory of Prof. Roberto Sorrentino. A 500 € prize will be awarded to the main author of the best work submitted to the 2024 Annual Meeting of the Italian URSI National Committee (URSI ITNC), provided that the following requirements are met: the main author must be less than 35 years old at the date of September 30, 2024, and the subject of the work must be within the scope of one of the ten Scientific Commissions of URSI.
This year, the National Congress of URSI ITNC will be organized in Viareggio (Lucca), jointly with RiNEm. Submission procedures and the template for contributions to the Sorrentino Award are available at the following address (Latest News section):

Roberto Sorrentino graduated in electronic engineering from the University of Rome “La Sapienza,” where he began his academic career, becoming an associate professor of “Microwave Measurements” and “Solid State Electronics” in 1982. In 1983 and 1986, he was a Research Fellow at the University of Texas at Austin (USA), where he initiated a fruitful scientific collaboration with Prof. Tatsuo Itoh. In 1986, he became a full professor at the University of Rome “Tor Vergata”.
